Heute habe ich ausnahmsweise eine Überstunde gearbeitet. Als ich dann um 18h00 den Aufzug in die unterste Etage nehme, steigt der Staatssekretär ein und fragt, an was ich denn so im Moment arbeite. Ich konnte die Frage nicht ganz ernst nehmen, da er mir in Jogginghose und Laufshirt gegenüber stand und dazu noch meinte er würde jetzt seine Runde durch den Botanischen Garten machen ...

Chase a 18-year old naked man

It was 2am on March 2 and in the following hours, an incident allegedly took place in Mr Hughes' Hataitai home that triggered a complaint to police from an 18-year-old student.

Elysée-Montmartre: A legendary ball-room

I remember too well the nights at the legendary Elysée Montmartre in the 90s. At the heels of the Sacré-Cœur sits the historic building. I enjoyed some of my prime music events in this Paris venue. I really felt sorry to hear that the interior was destroyed by the fire.

Soviel zum sauberen Image der Kiwis ....

NZ verkauft sich ja als "clean and green". Nun gut, bis jetzt haben sie nicht die Landschaft verschandelt oder Boden, Wasser und Luft mit Atommüll oder sonstigen giftigen Chemikalien verseucht. Nichtsdestotrotz haben die Kiwis auch so ihre Schwachpunkte: Die Wasserqualität mancherorts läßt zu wünschen übrig. Das hat unter anderem mit der intensiven Landwirtschaft zu tun und dass sie anscheinend keine Kläranlagen kennen ...

The Hobbit: Shooting has begun

Hallo Leute und liebe Ring-Fans!
Wer es noch nicht mitbekommen hat, heute haben die Dreharbeiten für den Film "The Hobbit" in Wellington angefangen.
Kein Mensch weiß genau, wo gefilmt wird und alles wird ziemlich geheim gehalten.

Allein das nebenstehende Foto wurde heute freigegeben, auf dem Peter Jackson selbst durch ein Hobbit-Loch, sprich Hobbit-Tür, auf die Kamera zugeht.

Feijoas grow in NZ

I did not know this fruit at all. It is native to the highlands of southern Brazil, Colombia and Uruguay and part of Argentina. The fruit is green and about the size of a chicken egg. It has a sweet, slighty chewing gum flavor. The flesh is juicy and is divided into a clear gelatinous seed pulp and a firmer, slightly gritty, flesh nearer the skin. The fruit drops when ripe and at its fullest flavor.

My first Cricket match

Well, it was not really a match, it was not even really Cricket but I got the taste of it. And I tell you continental Europeans, it is quite difficult to through the ball and the pitch is bigger than I expected.

Bluegrass Society in Petone lädt ein ...

Die Wellington Bluegrass Society ist so eine Art Verein, der versucht Musik aus der guten alten Zeit zu pflegen.
Heute gab es ein Konzert mit drei Gruppen. Die ersten beiden Vorbands brachten den Saal so richtig in Stimmung, damit der main act der Kombo aus Christchurch den kleinen Gemeindesaal auf Hochstimmung bringen kann ....

Und es gibt natürlich immer live Musik dabei und das ganze startet mittags, also quasi so um 11h11.

Die ersten Südwinde ...

Wenn man in Europa vom Wind aus dem Süden redet, denkt man ja an schönes und warmes Wetter. Diese Woche ist zum ersten Mal so richtig der Wind hier in NZ aus dem Süden gekommen! Und wir hatten einen Temperatursturz von 23° auf 15° Celsius. Das war schon gewöhnungsbedürftig. Hier heißt es also: Süden ist schlecht, weil antarktisch-kalt!
Genauso sind beliebte Wohnungen oder Häuser in NZ nach Norden ausgerichtet! Ist halt alles andersherum hier .... und zum Glück kommt der Wind in der Zwischenzeit wieder aus Norden!

"Land der langen weissen Wolke", man kann nur immer wieder sagen, wie zutreffend manche Bezeichnungen der Maori sind ....

Orcas in Wellington Bay

Incredible, we have seen at least three orcas this morning around Camp Bay.
I grabbed my camera before leaving for a walk to the Pencarrow lighthouse thinking there might be something interesting to take a photo of.
Likely, two other walkers stopped and told us that there was a "big tail" coming out of the water.
We have seen up to 5 whales.

As I was not quick enough there is only one pic of mine where you can still identify the shape of the whale.


Friends told us that orcas are commonly seen around Wellington during cooler weather, ie. starting in March. They sometimes come close to shore in pursuit of food.

Yet another reason why this is an incredible place to live.

Wieder Geschichten aus dem Büro: casual Friday

Gut, mittlerweile kennt man auch in Kontinental-Europa den lässigen Freitag, an dem man nicht unbedingt mit Krawatte und Jacket ins Büro tapsen mussen.
NZer und insbesondere mein Kollege Jacob haben den casual Friday fast schon perfektioniert.
Jacob kommt z.B. freitags im Fußball-Trikot von Arsenal London ins Büro, weil er ja später, d.h. so um 16h30 das Büro verläßt, um erst einmal ein paar Pint im Pub und dann das Fußballspiel am Freitagabend im Wellingtoner Stadion zu sehen, auch wenn da Arsenal nicht mitspielt!

I represent the Queen ...

In my former life at the European Commission sometimes you signed or agreed to a contract given to some dodgy academic or consultant. The wording of the contract was at least as dodgy as the academics or consultants who won it, something like "due to the delegated power from the Treaty to the European Commission to enact ... blablabla ...."

Here in New Zealand things are crystal clear: The words in the contract start with "I, on behalf of the Queen, agree to give a contract to ...."

Wild at heart

Der Slogan des Flughafens in Wellington heißt "Wild at heart"! Keine Ahnung, wer sich das ausgedacht hat und was es bedeuten soll.

Vielleicht damit, dass An- und Abflüge mal etwas aufregender sein können als üblich.
