Unsere WG verändert sich

Marika ist letzten Samstag ausgezogen und heute ist der erste waschechte Kiwi, Danny, bei uns eingezogen.

Mit dem Fahrrad auf der Autobahn

Ich überlege jetzt auch ernsthaft, morgens mit dem Fahrrad zur Arbeit zu fahren.
Die Strecke habe ich gestern auch mal ausprobiert! Da ich aber am anderen Ende der Wellingtoner Bucht wohne, gibt es nur einen Fahrradweg nach Wellington City und der führt über .... haltet Euch fest! ... die Autobahn!
Da rasen dann die Autos mit 100km/h an Dir vorbei, während Du so richtig strampelst ...

Das ist Neuseeland! Die Fahrradwege sind hier eher praktisch gehalten, also einfach auf der normalen Straße. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob ich das regelmäßig machen werde, da es mir doch etwas zu gefährlich vorkommt.

Wellington windstill

Das ist selten! Heute war so gut wie kein Wind in Wellington und die Bucht war spiegelglatt. Dummerweise hatte ich keine Kamera dabei. Als ich allerdings heute morgen noch Fahrrad gefahren bin, hatte ich gegen Wind aus Süden, die sogenannten southerlies, die kalt und unangenehm sind.

Würdet Ihr ein Kajak mit folgender Beschreibung kaufen?

Das ist so die typische Kiwi-Art eine schon etwas abgenutzte Ware anzupreisen:

Fiberglass Kayak 4 M long & 600mm wide.

Sound condition but has has a few scars & scratches as you would expect.
It would have been a great kayak in its day & it still has plenty of life left but probably not ideal for going too far off shore. 

Was meinen die wohl mit "still has plenty of life left"? Und nach meiner Leseart könnte man letztes schnell verlieren, wenn man "to far off shore" paddelt?

60km to prepare the next Taupo challenge

Made more than 60km on bike yesterday. Well, not really a long ride but it went up and down through "Whitemans valley", probably a not very political correct name for a nicely stretched valley.

But don't worry too much. The area was first settled by the "Whiteman family" and still today there are many farms around ...

Wie geht's dem Fisch?

Über die "Don't drink & fry" Campagnen habe ich ja schon berichtet.
Recht lustig finde ich folgenden Spot zu unangemessenem Fahren bei schlechter Witterung. Die Story ist schnell erzählt: Zwei Kiwis kommen vom Angeln (Nationalsport oder -Hobby, je nach Ansicht), und unser Mitfahrer ist mächtig stolz über den dicken Fisch, den er gefangen hat und der natürlich auch im Auto mitfährt.
Die Reisegeschwindigkeit ist angemessen, aber es setzt Regen ein. Zumindest wird der Scheibenwischer eingeschaltet, aber in der nächsten Kurve erwischst die beiden Freunden und sie liegen kopfüber im Auto.
Die wichtigste Frage: How is the fish?

Matangi train

Wellington region introduced new Matangi trains for their commuters.
Well, the Korean built trains arrived now in the capital but TranzMetro, the regional train company, forgot to train enough train drivers! So introduction is delayed further!

Danksagung an den Sprecher

Eine weitere schöne Geste, die wir so in Europa weniger kennen, besteht darin, dass dem Sprecher eines Vortrag von einem der Teilnehmer ein Dankeswort (meist im Namen der ganzen Grupper bzw. der Zuhörerschaft) ausgesprochen wird.

Als ich diese Situation das erste Mal erlebt habe, war ich ein weniger überrascht, als auf einmal und für mich sehr überraschend die Konferenzleiterin einen Teilnehmer aufforderte, dem Vortragenden jetzt doch einmal zu danken.

Mount Taranaki : die Maori-Legende

This is a nice story:

According to Māori mythology, Taranaki (the English name is "Mount Egmont") once resided in the middle of the North Island, with all the other New Zealand volcanoes.



The beautiful Pihanga was coveted by all the mountains, and a great battle broke out between them. Tongariro eventually won and inflicted great wounds on the side of Taranaki, and causing him to flee.
Taranaki headed westwards, following Te Toka a Rahotu (the Rock of Rahotu) and forming the deep gorges of the Whanganui river, creating the depression that formed the Te Ngaere swamp, then heading north. Further progress was blocked by the Pouakai ranges, and as the sun came up Taranaki became petrified in his current location. When Taranaki conceals himself with rainclouds, he is said to be crying for his lost love, and during spectacular sunsets, he is said to be displaying himself to her. In turn, Tongariro's eruptions are said to be a warning to Taranaki not to return.

Lake Taupo Challenge

As I said earlier in my blog the Taupo Challenge was exactly not that tough because I had favourable wind conditions. But the fotos are nice anyway.

Keine gefährlichen Tiere - dafür Pollen und Gräser

Hallo Allergiker und die es werden wollen!

Es gibt in NZ keine wilden oder gefährliche Tiere wie in Australien. Allerdings müssen sich Europäer erst an die neuen Pollen und Gräser gewöhnen.
Ich hatte bis jetzt nie im Leben Probleme damit, aber selbst ich nieße in NZ mehr als in Europa, aber vielleicht bilde ich mir das auch nur ein.

Nach ein paar Monaten ist das aber vorbei!

History: Battle Hill

On a cold August morning in 1846 the first shot was fired in a confrontation between Government forces and around 300 of Te Rangihaeata's Ngati Toa near the summit of Battle Hill.

"Battle Hill Farm Forest Park" is the site of one of the last battles between Maori and early colonial forces in the region. The park showcases interesting examples of local heritage and environmental restoration.
