Another behavior of the Hobbits: Sitting on the ground everywhere

Is this just another behavior of New Zealanders? Or is this just normal?

Many NZers run around bearfoot, well, those who followed my blog know that.

Another type of behaviour which struck me was the fact that you see a lot of Kiwis sitting on the ground of the sidewalk or of the train plattform waiting for the bus or train.

An Italian new immigrant had the same observation in the immigrantNZ blog:
Why do so many Kiwis like to sit on the dirty ground eg at railway stations, bus stops etc? I don't just mean kids, I've seen people in suits do it to....

Answer of the Kiwis: "We're funadmentally lazy."

Or like this: "I think Kiwis grew up in a very clean environment. We never considered these things to be dirty just because we walked on them .... keep nz clean ! that was our motto and so we knew there was nothing to be feared from sitting down anywhere that took our fancy. And it so relaxing down there rather than sitting bolt upright in a chair :)"
